Dawson, YT Fire, Dec 1906
M'INNIS IS BURNED OUT.
GOVERNMENT HOUSE AT DAWSON WAS DESTROYED BY FIRE YESTERDAY -- EXPLOSION OF THE HEATING PLANT THE CAUSE -- McINNIS AND WIFE ABSENT IN OTTAWA.
Dawson, Dec. 26. -- Government House, the most famous landmark in the Yukon territory, was burned yesterday. The house is a total wreck, and nothing was saved from the flames.
The origin of the fire was the explosion of the heating plant of the house, and so quickly did the flames take hold that the employes in charge of the place were unable to save even their personal effects.
The loss will amount to $100,000, including the furniture and personal effects of Governor McINNIS, and his employes.
The governor and his wife are now in Ottawa, but have been appraised of their loss.
The present system of fire fighting in Dawson worked poorly during the fire, otherwise there might have been a chance of saving the building.
Government House was built by Governor ROSS in 1861, and was noted as the scene of the most elaborate social functions ever given in the Klondike.
