Casper, WY Train Plunges Through Bridge, Sept 1923
20 UNACCOUNTED FOR IN A WYOMING WRECK.
BURLINGTON PASSENGER TRAIN PLUNGED THROUGH BRIDGE NEAR CASPER, WYO. -- MANY INJURED; 20 BELIEVED DEAD.
Casper, Wyo., Sept. 28. -- Rescue of additional survivors from the wreckage of train No. 30 on the Burlington railroad which plunged through a bridge 14 miles from here, cut the number of missing to twenty. These are probably dead in the opinion of C. A. McBRIDGE, assistant superintendent in charge of rescue work.
All members of the train crew first believed lost, were found alive in the wreckage just out of reach of the swirling waters of the big muddy river which had been swollen from a little mountain stream to a torrent by a cloudburst. The six members of the train crew were all seriously injured.
The tabulation of the 66 passengers and six trainmen aboard showed the following were saved:
Thirty-two passengers in the two rear sleepers which remained on the track.
Fourteen passengers who were in the two day coaches which tumbled into the creek; most of these were seriously injured.
The train crew of six.
This leaves 20 still unaccounted for.
