Azusa, WY Train Collision, Nov 1904

NINE PERSONS DIE ON THE RAIL.

HEAD-ON COLLISION BETWEEN PASSENGER AND FREIGHT TRAINS.

Salt Lake City, Utah, Nov. 14. -- Nine persons were killed and five injured, two seriously, in a head-on collision between Union Pacific west-bound passenger train No. 3 and east-bound extra-freight train a short distance west of Azusa, Wyo., on the Oregon Short Line.
The dead are:
Engineer B. F. ECCLES.
Conductor JOSEPH LOWHAM (of the freight train)
Fireman WILSON.
Express Messenger WINSLOW.
S. S. EBBESEN.
Mail Clerk H. M. SHERMAN.
Mail Clerk JOHN NOLAN.
J. MURRAY.
ROY CHAMBERLAIN.
The injured are:
MRS. J. STILLSTROM, spine hurt.
EMMETT WILCOXSON, cut on head.
THOMAS ECHLER, leg, hand and face.
A. TRAYNER, back.
FRED WILSON, chest, hip and back.
J. J. BAYLERS, neck and back.
GEORGE P. O'MALLEY, back.
SAM J. HOBBS, neck and back.
The cause of the collision was that the freight crew read "fifty" minutes instead of "thirty" minutes, in its orders.
