Couple Killed in Oneida In Car - Truck Collision

RHINELANDER - A Kaukauna, Wis., couple were killed Saturday morning in southeastern Oneida County when the car they were in slid broadside into a truck, according to the Oneida County Sheriff's Department.

The victims were Gregory M. Faust and his wife, Agnes, both 68. Their deaths brought to 47 the number of persons killed in traffic accidents this year in the six-county area of Gogebic and Ontonagon counties in Michigan and Iron, Ashland, Vilas and Oneida counties in Wisconsin. There were 46 fatalities in the area at the same time last year.

The couple was riding in a car driven by Leona Faust, also 68 and from Kaukauna, when it collided with a heavy truck driven by Harry Spencer, 59, Polar, Wis. The accident happened on a large curve on Highway 45 a mile south of Monico at 8:40 a.m.

Officers said the southbound Faust car slid into the path of the northbound truck. The passenger side of the car was smashed by the impact. Officers said the dead woman was apparently riding in the rear seat and the dead man on the passenger side in the front.

Leona Faust, Mr. Faust's sister-in-law, suffered a fractured arm and leg, plus other injuries, and was taken to St. Mary's Hospital, Rhinelander, where she was in the intensive care unit today. Spencer, who was driving a truck used for hauling junk metal, was uninjured, officers said.
