MEDFORD IN RUINS.

UPWARDS OF $100,000 WORTH OF PROPERTY IN RUINS.

ONE OF THE MOST PROSPEROUS VILLAGES IN NORTHERN WISCONSIN NEARLY WIPED OUT.

TWENTY-ONE BUILDINGS BURNED.

At 3:40 Thursday morning, the news came clanging over the wires that the Wisconsin Central Depot and town of Medford were on fire, upon the receipt of which Dispatcher SWEETMAN started a train from Abbottsford to save the Company's cars, but owing to the intense heat the side track could not be opened, and six of the cars burned. By four o'clock all communications by telegraph were cut off until 7 o'clock. At 7:45 a request for aid was telegraphed to this city. The hand engine was loaded and the train started at 8:35, arriving at Medford at 11:10. The special would have made better time had they not been delayed by passing trains and a hot engine truck. Under the circumstances they made excellent time and C. D. UPSON the Conductor and ABE GILBERT, the engineer, did their very best, and are deserving of credit. B. C. SPAULDING, JOHN LUTZ, JR., and several who happened to be near when the engine was loaded, went along. We understand the engine did good work and really saved a large quantity of lumber. The following list of losses and insurance was kindly furnished us by B. C. SPAULDING, who gathered them from the parties that afternoon, and is correct as could be got so early after the fire:

VAN OSTITY & BERGMAN, loss $8,000.
MRS. HOBBS, loss $300.
STIMN'S barber shop, loss $500.
Star and News Office, loss $4,000.
W. C. R. R. Depot, loss $2,500.
GAY & BISCOMET, loss $4,000.
B. F. & Co., loss $13,000.
Lumber, at least loss of $12,000.
J. K. PARISH, loss $2,000.
MRS. KLINE, loss $1,000.
MATT SCIDMORE, loss $3,500, insurance $2,000.
FRANK BORDOWSKI, loss $8,000, insurance $2,500.
C. GLASSOE, loss $500.
CHAS. PETERS, loss $3,000.
Post Office moved to GLASSOE'S store.
Bank moved to KURTY'S drug store.
T. G. JEFFRES' agency carries $19,000, balance in E. H. WINCHESTER'SS, $35,000.
