Racine, WI Steamer Onoko & Schooner Mary D. Ayer Wreck - Five Drowned

FIVE DROWNED
By the Sinking of a Schooner in Lake Michigan
Chicago, May 17, - The schooner Mary D. Ayer was sunk in collision
with the steamer Onoko in Lake Michigan, off Grosse Point, early this
morning, and five members of her crew were drowned, two being saved.
Those lost were:
CAPTAIN WILLIAMS
CHARLES MATSON, mate
HENRY SHIRA, seaman
TOM JONES, seaman
FITZ, cook
All were from Chicago.
After the accident the Ayer drifted down the lake, with her bow stove
in and was picked up by the steamer City of Duluth. Shortly after
being taken in tow she sank, and only two of the crew of seven were
able to escape. The captain lost his life in endeavoring to save the
schooner, which, he could easily have abandoned in time to escape
drowning.
