SERIOUS WISCONSIN FOREST FIRES

Large Area in Three Counties Ravaged - Windy, and Flames Spreading.

GREEN BAY, Wis., Oct. 23. - Forest fires are still sweeping across Kewaunee and Ahnapee Counties and part of Brown County, between Green Bay and Lake Michigan, the burning district extending over a territory thrity to fifty miles long and ten to twenty miles in width. West and southwest of this city a large territory is also in flames. The wind is blowing a gale from the south, and fires are spreading in all directions.

Few detailed reports of losses are received, but between thirty and forty farm houses, with barns, craps, and machinery, have been destroyed. No towns or villages are reported in danger. The woods are dry as tinder, and the soil is baked to a depth of two to three feet. Continued dry weather, with no increase in the velocity of the wind, is certain to add many thousand dollars to the loss, as wells and streams are dry, and there is no protection against fire.

North of the city the lowlands extending to Peshtigo have been burned over, and there is no longer danger in that direction, though in the woods west of the bay fires are still burning fiercely. That territory is thickly settled by farmers, and reports of the progress of the fire are anxiously awaited.
