Owen, WI Train Wreck, May 1912

SOO FREIGHT GOES THROUGH A BRIDGE

Engine Had Passed Over When Structure Gave Way

NEWS OF NORTH FOND DU LAC

Minneapolis-Chicago Limited Passed Over Bridge One Hour Earlier – Accident West of Owen.

Part of the Soo line freight train, No. 21, which passed through here at 10:40 o'clock Thursday morning went through the bridge over the Black river, west of Owen, Thursday night. The bridge held up until the engine was safely across but gave way when the freight was about half over. Thirteen cars of merchandise were precipitated into the river. No lives were lost.

The Minneapolis-Chicago limited, which arrived here at 4:50 o'clock this morning passed over the bridge about one hour before the freight train went through. That no one was injured in the accident is almost a miracle.

The bridge, which is a modern steel structure, was weakened by the high water. It will probably require several days to erect a new bridge and in the mean time all traffic will be detoured over the old Soo line through Ladysmith.
