DUPONT POWDER PLANT EXPLODES
FIVE LARGE WISCONSIN MAGAZINES TEAR UP COUNTRY
Powder Town at Pleasant Valley Practically Wiped Off the Map by Terrific Powder Explosion - Many Die From Fright.
Pleasant Valley, Wis., March 10. - The Dupont powder works here were practically wiped out with the town last night when five large powder magazines exploded, the magazines containing over 500 tons of powder. This morning it is known that 30 are dead, and with 300 injured, and many more insane from fright the loss may run to 50. Several hundred houses, occupied by the families of the employes, were razed, and the shock of the explosion was felt for a distance of a hundred miles.
Those who live to tell the tale are shattered wrecks today, unable to give any clear description. The plant was owned by the Dupont company, and it is probable the exact cause of the explosion will never be known.
Chicago, March 10. - The jar from the explosion of the five powder magazines was felt here.
