PREVENTS SERIOUS WRECK
(News Tribune Special.)
ASHLAND, Wis., Oct. 1. -- A new steel mail coach was all that averted what might have been a serious wreck on the Chicago & North-Western railway this morning. The Ashland special No. 11 was running at a rate of about 30 miles an hour when it hit an open switch about one mile south of Odanah.
The smash-up occurred about 7:30 o'clock a. m. The train was running at that rate of speed and it was impossible to stop and struck several steel ore cars that were standing on the siding, throwing the engine over on its side and derailing the mail coach. Engineer Abrams was picked up in a semi-conscious state, but soon recovered. Fireman Lyman was in the act of pulling down the coal when he was thrown from the cab, receiving slight injuries. The passengers were all badly shaken up, but no one was injured.
