Oshkosh, WI Coat on Fire May 1879

ERNST LUEDEN, who ran for alderman in the Fourth Ward this spring, was taken for a steam engine this morning. He was going down Main street, when a smoke commenced puffing out of his outside coat pocket. The smoke from the pipe in his mouth rendered the other smoke unnoticed, and it was not until a friend rushed at him and threatened to turn in a fire alarm that he discovered that his coat was on fire. Before the fire could be extinquished the pocket had been badly burned and some papers in it considerably charred. He reported that he had no insurance on his body.
