Milwaukee, WI Private Plane Crashes, July 1935
FOUR MEN DIE IN MILWAUKEE PLANE CRASH.
ILLINOIS QUARTET KILLED AS SHIP DIVES TO GROUND.
Milwaukee -- (UP) -- Four persons starting on a weekend pleasure flight around the Great lakes were killed instantly Saturday when their plane crashed as the pilot was attempting to land at the Curtiss - Wright airport here.
The dead:
ROBERT M. HENSCHEN, 29, Winnetka, Ill., pilot of the privately-owned plane, an official of the Commonwealth Edison Co.
WILLIAM H. ENNIS, Chicago, lawyer.
ELMER TENGBERG, also employed by the Commonwealth Edison Co.
GEORGE R. BURKHART, Chicago.
The plane left the Curtiss-Wright airport at Chicago and was to stop at Milwaukee on the first leg of a weekend jaunt. As the ship was cruising into the airport here, it suddenly plunged to the ground from a height of approximately 200 feet near a farmer's house.
Witnesses immediately ran to the scene, but found all four men dead. The plane did not catch fire.
An investigation of the accident was started by department of commerce officials. Witnesses at the airport expressed the opinion that HENSCHEN was attempting to land his plane at too slow a speed and lost control.
FRED KARSTON, a transport pilot who witnessed the crash from the field, said the HENSCHEN was in trouble when he attempted a down-wind landing.
The motor, he said, seemed to be working perfectly.
