Barracksville, WV Mine Explosion, Oct 1916
MINERS ENTOMBED BY AN EXPLOSION.
INTERIOR OF WEST VIRGINIA COLLIERY WRECKED BY THE BLAST.
Fairmont, W. Va., Oct. 20. -- Six men are known to have been entombed and nine others are missing as a result of an explosion of coal dust in Mine No. 7 of the Jamison Coal and Coke company at Barracksville, near here.
The interior of the mine as well as the tipple and other buildings were wrecked by the blast, and although 200 men are working desperately to clear away the debris, officials of the company believe it will be hours before rescuers can enter the workings.
Those known to have been entombed are:
JOHN DRUMMOND, electrician.
M. W. ALLISON, head machinist.
A. W. VANCE.
SQUIRE VINCENT.
JAMES BROWN.
JAMES MIMEAR.
The work of removing the wreckage is being superintended by R. H. JAMISON of Pittsburgh, general manager of the company, who happened to be in Fairmont. A rescue car from the Pittsburgh station of the bureau of mines is here.
About 250 men are ordinarily employed in the mine, but owing to a shortage in cars they were not working.
