Davis, WV Forest Fire, May 1896
HEMMED IN BY FLAMES
A Bride and Groom Had a Narrow Escape from Death.
Special to The Inquirer.
PITTSBURG, May 19.----Lee Ash and Carrie Osborne were married at Cumberland last week and went to Davis, W. Va., to live. Last Sunday the bride and groom, while visiting a cemetery near the "Falls." discovered that the forest fires, which had been burning on one side, had surrounded the grave-yard. Every avenue of escape was cut off. The fire came so near the couple that the bride's hat was burned and the groom's hair singed.
Believing that they were doomed the couple knelt and prayed for deliverance. It came in the shape of two men, who had been driven from the mountains into the cemetery to take refuge there from the crackling flames.
These men knew a path that led from the cemetery to a road and led the terrified bride and groom from the cemetery. The couple came to Cumberland to-day and showed evidences of the thrilling experiences they had.
