THREE COAL MINERS DIE IN SLATE FALL.

Man, W. Va. (UPI) -- Rescue workers dug with picks and shovels through tons of rock and coal to recover the bodies of three coal miners killed in a slate fall.
The bodies were found Wednesday night about nine hours after the fall nearly a mile inside the main tunnel of the Amherst Coal Co. slope mine near here where five men were working.
One miner escaped the cave-in and another was trapped near the edge of the fall -- his legs pinned by debris -- but was dug out quickly and suffered only minor injuries.
Cause of the fall was not known.
Six men were killed in a slate fall in the same mine in February, 1958.
It was the second mine disaster in West Virginia this year. Four miners were killed last May 6 in a flood at the Saxsewell mine of the Gauley Coal and Coke Co., at Hominy Falls. Twenty-one men were rescued in that incident.
About 800 tons of rock and coal collapsed on the men in the Amherst Mine Wednesday as they worked as old seam of coal.
