Wheeling, WV Reeds Grocery and Liquor Store Fire, May 1870

DESTRUCTIVE FIRE.
WHEELING, MAY 15.

About one o'clock this morning a fire broke out in the stable attached to REED'S grocery and liquor. The flames spread rapidly to a warehouse and residence adjoining which was soon completely enveloped. Before the fire could be got under control the entire contents of the residence and liquor store were destroyed. The flames there communicated to COLLIN'S brass foundry and WITTON'S plumber shop, both of which burned to the ground contents entirely lost.

Owning to some defect of the water pipes but on engine could be made serviceable, which will account for the almost entire loss. REED'S stock of merchandise and liquors was partially insured. The brass foundry and plumbing shop are without insurance.
