Fairmont, WV Train Collision, Jan 1901

EIGHT KILLED IN A WRECK.

TWO TRAINS COME TOGETHER ON A WEST VIRGINIA RAILWAY ON A BRIDGE.

Fairmont, W. Va., Jan. 9. -- Yesterday morning extra east engine No. 230 with twenty-three empty cars met engine No. 359 light, on the bridge crossing the mouth of Keen's Run above Everson section on the Monon division of the Baltimore and Ohio, which is twenty-five feet above the backwater of the Monongahela river, and collided. Both engines were going at full speed, as the Pittsburg flyer was nearly due. Engine No. 359 was headed east, but was running backwards and therefore going west.
The dead are:
W. R. BOWMAN, of Fairmont, engineer.
W. J. O'NEIL, of Siverly, Pa.
M. E. BRENNEN, of McKeesport, Pa., conductor.
JOHN DEVENY, of Fairmont, fireman.
WILLIAM PARRISH, of Keyser, W. Va., brakeman.
JOSEPH E. KING, of Monongah, W. Va., conductor.
W. E. MURRELL, of Fairmont, fireman.
Unknown Hobo.
The injured are:
J. F. TEDROW, of Fairmont, brakeman, fatally.
C. J. O'LEARY, of Keyser, W. Va., slightly.
THOMAS A. RICHARDSON, of Fairmont, engineer, slightly.
The heavy engine went entirely through the light one and as the entire crew was in the engine all were killed except Brakeman TEDROW, who was thrown into the river. He will die.
