Colfax, WA Palouse River Flood, Mar 1910
All Business Is Suspended
Schools Are Dismissed in Flooded Districts of Palouse Country.
Colfax, Wash., March 2.-The north branch of the Palouse River is still rising and the residence district in North Palouse is flooded to a depth in many places of from five to ten feet. In the south branch the water is back in its channel today.
Business had been entirely suspended and the schools have been dismissed. The town is without light or water, and because the wood yards have all been washed out a fuel famine is threatened. Mayor Lippitt today ordered that all saloons remain closed.
Reports from various points along the Palouse and its tributaries are that practically all the wagon bridges have been carried away.
The railroad situation is in bad shape. The O.R. & N. is making great efforts to restore its line to Spokane and hopes that it will accomplish this by tomorrow. The Inland Electric is stalled and has lost several miles of track. It will be several days before this line is restored.
There are no telegraph wires out of Colfax, in fact, the only communication with the outside world is by means of a single wire operated by the telephone company from here to Portland, via Walla Walla. The company hopes to restore a wire to Spokane tomorrow.
