Bridge Piledriver Operator Drowns

Richland-Alfred E. Smith, 41, pile driver operator, drowned in the Yakima river about 4:10 p.m. Wednesday when he apparently fell from the scaffolding of the U.P.N.P. railroad bridge now under construction, the Richmond patrol reported.
Police said Smith, of 1720 Mound Street, Pasco, disappeared from a catwalk on the bridge between 4:10 and 4:20 p.m. Wednesday. At 11:10 a.m. Thursday the body was downstream from the highway bridge. There were no witnesses to the accident.
Smith is survived by his wife, Mrs. May Smith, and three children, Rosanna, 13, Wayne 11, and Kenneth 11.
Smith had been employed by the Troxell Construction Company working on the bridge about three weeks.
