TWO LABORERS KILLED.

ACCIDENT IN REPAIRING THE UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA BUILDING.

Charlottesville, Va., Oct. 19. -- The roof of the new building which was being erected for the University of Virginia to replace the building destroyed by fire nearly a year ago collapsed this morning, carrying down several workmen. The killed are:
F. D. BOWEN, injuries to skull.
EUGENE BURCH.
GEORGE TUCKER.
The injured are:
V. W. CHAMBERS, possibly fracture of skull.
JOSEPH LAMB, head cut and probable spinal injuries.

The University of Virginia was wrecked by fire Oct. 27, 1895. The loss at the time was estimated at $100,000.
In the hall were the lecture rooms of common and statute law, physics, and modern languages, and in the rotunda the library and the lecture rooms of the Schools of Ancient Languages, Mathematics, Moral Philosophy, English, &c. In attempting to save the rotunda a porch which conducted the flames was blown up. Afterward the old chapel and reading room were destroyed by dynamite to check the spread of the flames.
At once plans were formed to secure funds for rebuilding, and there were hearty and liberal responses from alumni and friends of the university.
Plans of reconstruction were sent out in a few weeks which contemplated an expenditure of $346,000, including $60,000 for a rotunda and $90,000 for an annex. The New York alumni agreed to restore the library and replenish it.
