Richmond, VA Bus Crash, Sep 1972
2 KILLED, 44 HURT IN BUS CRASH.
Richmond, Va. (UPI) -- Two persons were killed and 44 others injured Sunday, when a Greyhound bus veered off Interstate 95 here, struck two guard rails, and overturned while plunging down a ravine.
The accident occurred about 2:30 a.m. The bus was bound from New York to Columbia, S.C.
The driver, JULIUS STOKES, of Philadelphia, was charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter and one count of reckless driving.
He was released on $3,500 bond, posted by Greyhound officials.
Police said the crash instantly killed two of the passengers, who were identified as FLORINE CRAWFORD, 19, of Pinesville, S.C. and HESTER McRAE, 67, of Brooklyn, N.Y.
A spokesman for the company declined comment on the accident, saying Greyhound was making its own investigation.
Police said the bus struck a guard rail in the median strip of the highway, then careened over to hit the guard rail in the emergency lane, and turned over while toppling down a ravine near a motel parking lot.
Three persons were listed in critical condition at area hospitals. They were SHARON TISDALE, 13, of Andrews, S.C.; RICHARDINE THREISE, age unknown, of Pinesville, S.C.; and one unidentified person.
Five others were listed in satisfactory condition.
Thirty-six persons were treated and released.
It took company officials 10 hours to reroute those passengers who were not hospitalized.
