FOUR KILLED AS PLANE CRASHES.

SMITHFIELD, N.C., FLIER ONE OF QUARTET TO DIE AS PLANE TUMBLES INTO JAMES RIVER.

Langley Field, Va., June 26. -- (UP) -- An explosion today was believed to have caused the crash of a United States army Boeing bombing plane into the James river and the death of four army fliers Saturday night.
Army salvage workers were to raise the broken bits of the plane and the bodies of its four occupants today. The bodies, thrown well forward into the fuselage by the impact of the crash, were discovered by navy divers yesterday.
The crash occurred two miles off shore from Rushmere, Va., about 10:30 Saturday night. Witnesses reported to Langley field officials that they heard an explosion aboard the plane as it was flying low over the river. The navigation light then went out and the plane dived into the water.
The plane was piloted by Second Lieut. L. HORVATH, of Wisconsin. Others in the plane, according to Langley Field records, were Lieut. H. W. MACKELCAN, Baltimore, and Privates J. J. SAYERE, Philadelphia, and ALBERT C. OLIVE, Smithfield, N.C.
The crash was reported to army officials here shortly before noon yesterday and planes from here and boats from Fort Houston were rushed to the scene.
The ill-fated bomber had taken off at Baltimore for Langley Field at 8:20 Saturday night.
