West Hartford, VT Railroad Accident On Vermont Central, Sep 1851

THE ACCIDENT ON THE VERMONT CERTRAL RAILROAD.
Boston, Thursday, Sept. 25.
The terrible accident on the Vermont Central Railroad, at West Hartford, Vt., six miles above White River junction, yesterday, was caused by an accident to the up freight train of ninety cars, which detained it some time in a cut. The engineer reported to the conductor of the train, that he had fourteen minutes to spare to reach a station, before the down passenger train came along. The engineer accordingly went ahead, when he was three minutes out of time, and met the train near a curve. Both engines were destroyed, besides one passenger and freight car. There were sixty passengers in the train, from seventeen to twenty of whom were badly injured.
The names of those most injured are as follows:
MR. PRATT, of Northfield, Vt., machinist, in the employ of the road, both his legs and one arm are broken.
C. P. KIMBALL, conductor of the passenger train, slightly injured on the head.
FREDERICK PALMER, brakeman, slightly injured.
MR. MORSE, passenger, of Bethel, Vt., track repairer, died last night of his wounds.
MR. WALLACE, passenger of Chelsea, Vt., has become crazed by the collision.
MRS. DANFORTH, of Barnard, Vt., slightly injured.
The wounded were taken into a house near by, and physicians provided, who telegraphed this morning that the wounded will all recover.
The freight engineer is greatly blamed for not sending a signal ahead. He is among the missing.
