Burlington, VT Yacht Club Fire, Jul 1911

YACHT CLUB DESTROYED.

Calm Over Lake Champlain Prevents Disastrous Spread of Flames.

BURLINGTON, Vt., July 1.---Because there was a dead calm over Lake Champlain early this morning Burlington was saved from a fire disaster. Flames destroyed the Lake Champlain Yacht Club house, tenanted by wealthy New York Summer people, and would have swept through the big lumber yard district adjoining had there been even a slight breeze stirring.

The yacht club house occupied a private pier. The fire had burned through the roof when discovered. Aided by the calm the combined fire-fighting force of the city confined the blaze to the single structure. The loss is estimated at $40,000. Commodore Wetherbee announced that the club would rebuild immediately.
