Rutland, VT Train Wreck, Jun 1870

Removal of the Wounded by the Late Railroad Accident in Vermont.

TROY, June 11.---The Times has a special telegram from Rutland, Vt., which says that last evening at 4½ a special train having on board E. Foss, engineer, GEORGE KINNEY, fireman, W. J. HOWARD, express agent, B. F. KETCHUM, passenger, Brandon, Vt., Mr. HOUGHTON, passenger, Middlebury, Vt., and WILLIAM PRICE, passenger, Boston, wounded in the late railroad disaster at Summit station, left there for Rutland. The sufferers were laid on beds in the bottom of the cars. The engine, without the usual rattling, moved off slowly, almost in silence. Two hours were occupied in reaching Rutland, a distance of seventeen miles. At Rutland a space in the depot had to be roped off to keep back the crowd of mourning friends; while Messrs. FOSS, KINNEY and HOWARD, stretched on beds, their faces covered with handkerchiefs and looking as if life was almost extinct in them, were taken off, and slowly, with crowds following, were conveyed to their homes. Here the train was divided, one portion moving off slowly again toward Brandon and Middleburg, on the Rutland and Burlington Road, to leave Messrs., KETCHUM and HOUGHTON at their homes; the other portion taking the Rutland and Washington Road for Salem, N. Y., and Cambridge, with the wounded for these points. Only one is left at the Summit unable to be removed.
