Kaysville, UT Youth Killed In Grinder, Aug 1952
KAYSVILLE YOUTH KILLED IN GRINDER.
Kaysville -- KENT BARKER, 19, of East Kaysville was killed yesterday afternoon when he bacame entangled in the high-speed flywheel of a tractor-operated hammermill.
The youth, a prominent Davis high school athlete, suffered multiple injuries as the flywheel slammed him end-over-end several times. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Barker.
State Highway Patrolman GEORGE RHEES of Bountiful, first at the scene, said the youth died within three minutes after the mishap from loss of blood.
The officer said the youth's left arm was severed at the shoulder and broken in two places. His left leg was also broken. He had a basal skull fracture and multiple body injuries.
It was understood the youth had shut off the tractor and was attempting to remove the drive belt from the hammermill. His clothing apparently caught in the protruding six-inch flywheel.
He was struck against the side of the hammermill and the bed of a truck, backed near the machine, said Patrolman RHEES.
A young boy working with the youth ran for help and returned with a local farmer who extricated him.
The body is at the Union mortuary at Bountiful.
