Knocked From Mother's Arms By Auto, Child Carried Half Mile on Fender of Speeder
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Dec. 25 (AP). - Mary Maxine Cooper, 18 months old, was in the City Emergency Hospital Tuesday in a serious condition from injuries and exposure suffered when she was knocked from her mother's arms and carried for half a mile between the fender and hood of a hit and run driver's automobile here.
Clair Christiansen, 6, was killed in the accident and Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Cooper, the girl's parents, and Jewell Marx were injured.
M. D. Johnson, 24, alleged driver of the death car, was held in the city jail on an open charge after his father had brought Mary Maxine to the home of Police Chief Joseph E. Burbridge some time after the accident and said that the child had been carried a half mile before being removed by the driver. She suffered cuts and bruises.
Almost simultaneous with the [section missing] fatally injured in an automobile collision in the downtown section. Her father's machine collided with an automobile driven by Ludean Maxfield of Salt Lake and Maxfield was arrested.
Mr. and Mrs. Warner and their daughter of Boise were en route to Beaver, Utah, for the Christmas holiday. Vera Fay's toys which Santa Claus was to deliver to her at Beaver, were strewn about the street at the scene of the accident. The parents were uninjured.
