Sand Point, ON Train Collision, Feb 1904
SOO LINE TRAINS COLLIDE HEAD-ON.
DISASTROUS WRECK ON THE C.P.R. MAIN LINE AT SAND POINT NEAR ARNPRIOR -- FIFTEEN TRAIN HANDS AND SEVEN PASSENGERS KILLED -- ENGINEER JACKSON, TWO EXPRESS MESSENGERS AND THE NEWS AGENT ON THE DEATH LIST.
Ottawa, Feb. 9. -- A report has reached here of a collision between two Soo line trains on the Canadian Pacific railway at Sand Point, on the main line, about 60 miles from Ottawa and five miles west of Arnprior. Fifteen passengers and train employees are killed, including the engineer of one of the trains as well as a newsboy and two express messengers.
Several Persons Were Injured.
The collision took place between the Soo train going west and the Soo train east. The westbound train left Montreal at 10 p.m. passed through Ottawa over an hour late. It was booked to reach Arnprior at 3:18 this morning. The train leaving Sault Ste. Marie was timed to reach Arnprior at 2:23 a.m. Both trains were running late. Neither train stopped at Sand Point.
The crews of both trains are from Ottawa. It is said that Engineer JACKSON, of this city, is among the killed. The names of the passengers are not obtainable at present.
It is understood that the two trains were supposed to cross at Sand Point, but for some reason the westbound train proceeded westward and about two miles from Sand Point a head-to-head collision occurred. Nine bodies were taken from the wreck, which occurred in a country district, some miles distant from a telegraph office.
The names of the dead so far obtainable are:
JOSEPH JACKSON, engineer, 279 Concession Street, Ottawa.
Express Messenger ROBERTSON.
News Agent McMULLEN.
Express Messenger THOMPSON.
The passengers killed:
JAS. CARRIERE, of Ottawa.
JAMES HIGGINS, of Ottawa.
DOLPHIN SEGUIN, of Hull.
JAMES CHAPUT, of Hull.
WILLIAM McMULLEN, Montreal.
WILLIAM POULET, Whitney.
There is also a man who could not be identified, but the name EZA. RICHER was in his pocket.
The injured are:
Fireman PRICE.
Mail Clerk BLACK.
Engineer DUDLEY.
Fireman DUBOISE, who is in a serious condition and not expected to live.
Baggageman O'TOOLE.
Mail Clerk BEACH.
Several passengers.
