Fire Razes Two Aspermont Homes

ASPERMONT, Feb. 27 - (Spl) - Citizens of Aspermont gave credit tonight to the fire departments of Haskell, Stamford and Rule for extinguishing a blaze that threatened for a short time to raze the town.

Two frame residences burned to the grounnd early tonight in the face of a roaring sandstorm whith an estimated damage of about $5,000. Both houses, one a six room and the other a four room, were owned by Mrs. E. P. Glass.

The fire first broke out in the roof a house occupied by Tex Springer, only a block west of the city square. With no water immediately available and fanned by the wind, the blaze destroyed the house in a few minutes. No furniture or personal belongings were saved.

In the meantime the fire had spread across a vacant lot to the house occupied by Mrs. Glass. Some of the furniture was saved before the house lay in ruin.

Firemen kept the blaze from jumping across the street to a lumber yard and other near residences. Cause of the fire remained unknown late tonight.

With large blazes threatening to destroy Aspermont and Hamlin early last night, the Abilene fire department was asked to stand by in case extra aid was needed.

Fire Chief Roe prepared two trucks for emergency duty if needed. One was to go to Stamford if an alarm was sent there, all local equipment having been sent to the Aspermont and Hamlin fires. The other truck was to go to Hamlin if the blaze was not brought under control.

Neither of the trucks were used.
