Zephyr, TX Train Wreck, Sept 1902 - List of Injured
MANY HURT IN A SANTA FE WRECK
PASSENGER TRAIN ROLLS DOWN AN EMBANKMENT
Mrs R. L. Humphreys of Houston and Five Members of Her Family Injured. Mrs Humphreys Probably Will Die.
Brownwood, Tex., Sept 2 - (Special) - The west bound Santa Fe passenger train with Asa Wilder, conductor, was wrecked seven miles east of here last night. The wreck was caused by a broken rail. Three passenger coaches left the track and rolled down an embankment into the ditch. The mail coach left the track on a twenty foot trestle and was completely demolished.
Injured:
Mrs R. L. Humphreys, skull fracture; will not recover.
Kate Humphreys, internal injuries; serious.
Alice Humphreys, badly bruised on body.
Lynn Humphreys, ear badly cut.
Agnes Humphreys, hand badly mashed.
Nel Humphreys, slightly bruised.
Lee Hall, Brownwood, head and face slightly cut.
Mrs B. K. Hawkins, slight injuries.
Mrs M. L. Gilbert, Cleburne, bad cut [illegible].
Mrs Gilbert's little son, badly bruised.
George Brownlee, Zephyr, badly cut on face.
Bob Bradberry, Zephyr, leg mashed.
Steve Hayes, Zephyr, slight bruises.
Miss Anna Johnson, bruised.
R. N. Usleton, Temple, sprained back.
Delia Hill, Killeen, head and hand cut.
Mrs. Mary Adams, Williamson county, head cut.
Mrs Bullen, Belmont, Tex., shoulder badly bruised.
Lee Neblett, Waco, badly bruised.
B. Maxwell, mail clerk, hips badly bruised.
Jeff Crossland, head and shoulders badly bruised and cut.
R. E Baker and J. W. Jackson, Brownwood, slightly bruised.
The injured were taken to Brownwood early this morning. All are reported as doing well save Mrs Humphreys.
Relief Train from Temple.
Temple, Tex., Sept 3 - (Special) - The west bound branch Sante Fe passenger train was wrecked last night between Mullen and Zephyr and several people more or less hurt. The cause of the accident is supposed to have been a broken rail and the incoming trainmen report that about where the wreck occurred the track was rough as they come over it. The mail car and two coaches were smashed more or less and Mail Clerk Benson Maxwell from here was seriously hurt. Brakeman Jeff Crossland was also bruised, also Miss Anna Johnson of this city. A relief train with Superintendent Coppage and Train Master Hall left for the wreck and has not yet returned.
