BUSINESS BLOCK IS DESTROYED BY FIRE

Damage to Buildings and Contents at Wharton, Tex., is Estimated at $60,000. Other Fires.

Wharton, Tex., Dec. 30 - (Special.) - Fire which started at 12:39 this morning, destroyed a block of frame business houses. The total losses are estimated at $60,000 with insurance of 75 per cent of that amount. The firms which lost and the amounts are as follows:

R. B. Huston, $10,000; S. B. May, $3000; C. M. Hughes, $2500; E. W. Hawes, $1500; H. Becker, $3000; Henry Garrett, $5000; Blumberg, $2000; Spectator Newspaper, $1000; G. G. Kelly, $5000; John Garrett, $5000; Mrs. Thomas, $3000; H. G. Garloff, $2$$$ [sic]; Jack Rust, $2000; John Slaughter, $250; Neal & Ork, $300.

Other losses will run the total up, though none of them exceed $1000. J. L. Davis, Hilton Bros., Davidson & Davidson, Louise Smith, City Restaurant, J. L. Miller, W. N. Reed, J. C. Nic Brazzill, T. A. Johnson, Mrs. Watts, Joe Burger are among the other losers.

Wharton's Big Fire.

Wharton, Tex., Dec. 31. - By a fire here early Tuesday morning a loss of $60,000 was sustained, with about $5000 insurance. Fire started on northeast corner of the square and all of the block except a residence burned. George Brown, a negro, who rendered valuable assistance, fell from a two-story building and is thought fatally injured.
