3 in Family Die in Mishap

BAY CITY, Texas, Oct. 2 (AP).---Three members of a big family fishing party drowned shortly after 11 a.m. Sunday in Peyton Creek after a small skiff swamped and sank near Culder Bridge, about fourteen miles from Bay City.

Five persons, two women and three children, were rescued.

The drowned were:

Henry Lewis, Sr., 47, and his son, Henry Lewis, Jr., 20.

Arthur Lewis, 45, brother of Henry Lewis, Sr.

Arthur Lewis and Henry Lewis, Jr., on the bank when the skiff sank, drowned trying to rescue those in the boat.

The rescued were:

Mrs. Henry Lewis, Sr., and her 6 year old daughter, Jessie Lee.

Mrs. Arthur Lewis and her daughters, Lorene, 15, and Dorothy, 11.

Mrs. Henry Lewis was once given up for dead but she was revived by artificial respiration.

Alex Govander Jr., 40 year old Wadsworth farmer, and Pete Williams, 30, also a farmer, were the heroes of the rescue.

Two ambulances taking the survivors to the Matagorda County General Hospital sideswiped in an accident on the courthouse square by nobody was injured in the crash.
