Denton, TX Flood, Mar 1897

PART OF DENTON FLOODED.

Creeks Are Rising and Railroad Property Is Damaged.

Denton, Tex. March 28.----A heavy rain has been falling here all day and all the creeks are overflowing. Pecan creek, running through town, is out of its banks, and several families in the lowlands were driven out of their homes, the water varying in depth from 2 to 15 or 18 feet.

Elm fork of the Trinity is reported bank full and rising rapidly. Drift wood is banked up against the Hickory creek railroad bridge, and a force of section hands has gone south to remove the debris.

A wash-out occurred on the Dallas and Wichita branch just below Farmers' Branch and the Missouri, Kansas and Texas passenger No. 47 had to come back to this place, and got to Dallas via Fort Worth.

It is feared that there will be some stock and crop losses in the larger creek bottoms. Big Elm creek is rising at the rate of 5 feet per hour, and other smaller creeks are rising rapidly.
