FIVE KILLED AND ABOUT 15 INJURED AROUND LEONARD

Special to The News.

Leonard, Fannin Co., Texas. April 9. - Five persons were killed, about fifteen seriously injured and hundreds left shelterless by a storm which destroyed or damaged every building within a radius of ten miles of this place shortly after midnight last night. Three miles west of Pike Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence and four children were killed and two other children injured, perhaps fatally. Two miles north of the Lawrence home Miss Rene Pryor was killed and her brother, Sam Pryor, severely injured.

Mr. and Mrs. James Fuller, living near the Pike community, were reported severely injured.

In the Belba community, five miles west of Leonard, several members of the Davis family sustained injuries. The store at Belba, was swept away and an iron safe weighing nearly a ton, which was in the building, is in the road about sixty yards away.

Within the territory surrounding Trenton fully fifty families were left homeless. The property damage within the town was heavy, but casualties were comparatively few, due to the fact that most of the people found refuge in storm cellars. Among the seriously injured are S. T. Willis, superintendent of the school; Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Elmore and Mrs. Ann Mangrum. The school building, thee gins, elevators, two churches and a garage were badly damaged.

Steps to aid the storm sufferers were begun here today and a request was sent by wire to Dallas for fifty tents to shelter the homeless families.
