Austin, TX Plane Lands in Lake Travis, Jan 1942

Flier Drowns, One Safe, as Plane Hits Lake

AUSTIN, Texas, Ja. 25 (AP)—One of two Brooks Field aviators drowned and the other escaped Sunday when their plane made a forced landing on Lake Travis, about six miles above Marshall Ford Dam, First Lieut. W. W. Holmes of Brooks Field announced here Sunday night.

Second Lieut. O. R. S. Graham, Long Beach, Calif., drowned when he was unable to swim ashore. Lieut. C. U. Bullis, San Antonio swam to shore after he was unable to keep Graham above water.

Lieutenant Graham, pilot, and Lieutenant Bullis were flying with three other planes en route to San Antonio from Austin.

“After the ship hit the water, the canopy popped open,” Lieutenant Bullis said. “The plane fell about 200 yards from shore.

“We released our parachutes and climbed from the ship.

“We started swimming to the shore. I was about ten feet from Graham. I looked back and saw that Graham was in trouble. I removed my jacket and swam to his aid. I raised him to the top of the water three times. About 150 yards from shore I became exhausted and swam ashore,” he said.
