Fire Hits Llano Courthouse

LLANO. Dec 16 - Fire gutted most of the second and third floor offices of the Llano County courthouse Sunday afternoon before it was finally controlled by the Llano Volunteer Fire Department with help from three neighboring fire-fighting companies. Damage was estimated at about $100,000 based on replacement cost, by Fire Chief Martin Hoy and Sheriff L. D. Turbeville. The sheriff said he believes the fire started in a small third floor storeroom.

It is believed most of the valuable county records were safe in big fire-proof vaults. Most of such papers were in first-floor offices.

Fredericksburg, San Sabo [sic] and Mason sent their firefighters. Firemen battled the blaze two hours before it was controlled. The fire was discovered about 3 p.m.

Sheriff Turbeville said the county holds $40,000 in insurance to help cover the loss.
