Marshall, TX Tornado, Apr 1927
One Death at Marshall.
MARSHALL. Texas. April 14 (Sp).--- MANDY NICKERSON, negro woman,
was killed, four negroes hurt, many houses unroofed, and otherwise damaged, trees uprooted, telephone lines torn down and traffic delayed as the result of a tornado which struck about five miles south of Marshall at 4:45 o'clock Thursday morning. The twister traveling in a northeasterly course, left destruction in its 500-foot path. The dairy barn of W. A. Brooks was damaged, the cyclonic wind carrying away the roof and scattering sheet iron in every direction.
The porch roof of the brick home of Dan Zimmerman was twisted off his barn was leveled, as were several outbuildings.
The usual prank of the storm was in evidence, as the lock to Mr. Zimmerman's garage was torn away and the building itself undamaged.
A tenant house on the Hicks property was destroyed, and the Hicks home was damaged. The residence of Emmet Jordan, across the street from the Zimmerman home, also was badly damaged. All windows were broken, chimneys torn blown down, and every tree in the large yard uprooted.
The J. B. Jones store was blown from its foundation. The portecochere on the north side of Mr. Jones' home was carried over the top of the building and hurled into a field east of the road. The large supporting brick pillars were broken in two. All the outbuildings and trees were flattened by the fury of the wind.
