Flatonia, TX Locomotive Explosion, Jan 1911
TWO MEN TERRIBLY HURT IN EXPLOSION.
Flatonia, Texas, Jan. 12. -- A boiler explosion of tremendous force and disastrous consequences occurred at 12:15 o'clock this morning one mile west of this place.
Engineer ANDRE, a resident of San Antonio, received terrible injuries, but it is believed he has a chance to recover.
Fireman WRIGHT of San Antonio was taken from the wreck in what was believed to be a dying condition. Both men were conveyed to San Antonio after being attended at this place by Drs. John and Kaiser, local physicians for the company. The wrecker was sent here from San Antonio, bringing the company physician from that city.
The force of the explosion is indicated by the fact that the engine, which was east bound, was turned completely around. Heavy parts of the machinery were carried a distance of 300 feet.
The track was torn up for more than a hundred feet. Repairs were made at 8 o'clock this morning and the westbound passenger, which left Houston at midnight, proceded to San Antonio, having been held here from 5 a.m.
The wrecked engine was pulling the second section of fast freight No. 244. The engine boiler had been inspected last month, as shown by certificate attached.
Later -- The engineer and fireman both died.
