Albany, TX Plane Crash, Apr 1947

ALBANY, April 6 -- Albany veterans of World War II died by violence on Easter Sunday.... in an airplane crash.

J. B. Caudle, Jr., [sic] 19, and Marcelle Smalley, 20 were killed instantly when the two-place light plane they were flying crashed eight miles west of Albany Sunday afternoon.

The plane which carried the two youths to their deaths burned after crashing, Homer Bailey, highway patrolman who investigated, said the plane was flying low and apparently had stalled. Cauble was a licensed pilot.

Cauble's parents are Mr. and Mrs. Joe Cauble and Smalley is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Smalley, all of Abilene.

Double Rites for Crackup Victims

ALBANY, April 7--(Spl)--Double memorial and funeral services were conducted Monday for Charles Marcell Smalley, 20, and Joe R. Cauble, 19, both who were killed in a plane crash near Albany late Sunday afternoon, at the Tayor-Miller American Legion post. Burial was in the Albany cemetery.

Mr. Smalley was born in Albany, Feb. 4, 1927. A veteran of World War 11, Smalley spent over one year in the Asiatic-Pacific theater.

Survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Smalley, a brother, Bill; and his grandmother, Mrs. M. A. Smith, all of Albany.

Mr. Cauble was born in Albany May 14, 1927 and was a Navy veteran, serving eight months in the Pacific theater.

Survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Cauble, Sr., one sister, Mara Ann Cauble; and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Bailey Cauble of Albany and Mrs. Agnes Gallagher of Ridgecrest, Calif.
