Lightning Kills Farm Girl Near Big Spring
Big Spring, June 4. (AP) – Shirlene HAYES, 15, was killed instantly and a brother-in-law, G. O. LANGSTON, was injured when lightning struck a family group in a farm yard in Martin county, 25 miles northwest of here, late Wednesday evening.
It was reported here that several members of the HAYES family had gone into the yard when a rainstorm came up, to gather up some chickens. Lightning hit a nearby fence, its force felling four in the group. The girls entire body was badly burned. LANGSTON was brought to a hospital here, where it was said his injuries were not believed serious. The others knocked down were not hurt.
Funeral services for the child, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F. C. HAYES, were planned for this afternoon.
