Oil Man Dies After Crash Near Abilene
Another Is Critically Injured In Midnight Mishap Of Automobile And Gas Truck
Death rode in the rain on highway 30 north of Abilene early today.
Guy Keel GUFFEE, 25, was instantly killed and Willis ATCHLEY, also 25, was critically injured when the car they were driving crashed into the back of a gasoline truck. The accident occurred about 12:45 a.m., as the two Abilene men, who had finished their tower on an oil lease near Anson at midnight, were en route home.
At Hendrick Memorial hospital at noon today, attendants reported ATCHLEY was in critical condition. His physician said he probably has a skull fracture, and was preparing to make a spinal puncture. He was in a semi-conscious condition.
GUFFEE died instantly from a crushed chest and a blow over the left eye. He was brought in an Elliott’s ambulance to the hospital, where a physician pronounced him dead. A Laughter ambulance moved ATCHLEY to the hospital.
Truck river (sic) Unhurt
Gene ROSSON of Big Spring was driving the gasoline truck and Dave HOWELL of Trent was riding with him. Neither was injured.
The accident occurred in a drizzling rain which continued in this area almost all night.
The impact punctured the gasoline tank and the mishap for a time took on an even more serious aspect as the inflammable fluid spread out over the highway, creating a fire hazard.
GUFFEE, a grandson of E. GUFFEE Thirteenth and Amarillo street, lived at 2118 Orange street. He was a nephew of Roy GUFFEY (sic) and a cousin of Theron GUFFEY (sic).
Guy GUFFEE was born September 17, 1911 in Wichita Falls.
His father died when he was 12 years of age and for eight years he lived in Dublin. He was married to Miss Avas Katherine NORRIS of Roscoe. October 5, 1932, and they lived there until moving to Abilene one year ago. Mrs. GUFFEE and one son, Guy Keel, Jr., survive.
Mother Marooned
GUFFEE’S mother, Mrs. R. A. STINEBAUGH, is marooned by floods in the little town of Hondo, N. M., and efforts to reach her by telephone or messenger had been fruitless at noon today. Roswell reported bridges out and routes into Hondo impassable. Funeral arrangements, in charge of Elliott’s, were incomplete pending word from the mother and other relatives.
Two sisters, Mrs. Edna Earl WINTERS of Evant, formerly of Abilene, and Miss Rachel STINEBAUGH of Roswell, N.M. also survive.
ATCHLEY’S home is 1250 Highland avenue. His father, J. P. ATCHLEY of Olney, and his wife were at his bedside at the hospital.
