Many Houses Blown Down

Special To The News.

Malakoff, Tex., May 21. – A terrific wind and rainstorm struck this section at 11 o’clock last night. The frame store building of G. W. URREY, containing stock of furniture and postoffice (sic), was blown down, completely wrecking the entire structure, and causing heavy damage to stock of goods. Loss to both building and merchandise probably $500. The Baptist Church was swept from its foundation and is almost a total wreck. The derrick recently erected to put down a test well for oil was also demolished. Several barns and stables around town were unroofed or partially so, and many fences leveled down. One-half mile west of town the residence of a Mr. REECE was blown from the blocks, but the family escaped injury more than a considerable fright. A tenant house of H. P. BARTON on his farm three miles north and occupied by a negro family was wrecked, but no casualty to the inmates. A tenant house of Tom SMITH, half a mile south of town, was also blown off its foundation. The ground-soaking rain that came will be of inestimable value to the entire country, and practically assures a banner crop.
