EAST TEXAS CRASH KILLS TEN PERSONS.

San Augustine, Tex. (AP) -- A headon collision at high speed between a pickup truck and an automobile killed 10 persons and injured two others near here Monday.
Sheriff E. C. Nichols estimated the speed of each vehicle at 70 m.p.h.
Two men were in the pickup truck. Ten persons, including 6 children, were in the automobile.
The dead were identified by Percy Garner, funeral home director here, as:
RALPH LEE REED, 22, the driver of the automobile; his wife, FRANCIS REED, 15; and their 3-months-old daughter, SANDRA KEY REED, all of Tenaha; JAMES RAYSON, 21, of Shelbyville; MRS. JOHNNIE MAE McCOLLISTER, 30; RUTHARD LEE GREEN, 9; PATRICIA GREEN DODD, 4; and DONNIE RAY BOYD and CONNIE RAY BOYD, seven-weeks-old twins, all of Center; and CHARLES McCLELLAND, 30, of Center, the driver of the pickup truck.
MAURICE McCLELLAND, 27, of Center, was taken to Veterans Administration Hospital at Shreveport, La., where he was reported in fair condition. MARGARET ANN DODD, 7, a daughter of MRS. McCOLLISTER by a previous marriage, was reported in satisfactory condition at a San Augustine hospital.
Sheriff Nichols said all the persons involved in the accident were Negroes. The two McCLELAND men, who were cousins, were in the pickup.
"The pickup truck was about six feet over the center line," the sheriff said. "It had just topped a little hill on a straight stretch of road."
Sheriff Nichols said there was no evidence of any drinking. Although rain had fallen during the night, the highway was dry when he reached the scene.
