Walter, TX Automobile Collision, June 1949
FIVE OF FAMILY KILLED IN CRASH; TWO INJURED.
Houston, Tex., June 4 -- (AP) -- Two persons remain in critical condition following a highway automobile collision which killed six other people, including five members of a Texas-Indiana family.
Two late model automobiles collided head-on shortly before midnight last night on the Bryan-Houston highway near Walter, 40 miles northwest of here.
Those killed:
MR. and MRS. JOHN W. COPPINGER, Pasadena, Tex.
MR. and MRS. THOMAS J. BALYEAT, Bristol, Ind.
MRS. JOHN THOMAS BALYEAT, 24, Elkhart, Ind., daughter of the COPPINGERS and daughter-in-law of the BALYEATS.
MRS. E. L. REID, JR., 23, Orange, Tex.
The injured:
E. L. REID, JR., 37, Orange, Tex., attorney whose wife was killed.
JOHN THOMAS BALYEAT, 33, Elkhart, Ind., whose parents and wife were among those killed.
REID is in a Bellville, Tex., hospital, while the younger BALYEAT is hospitalized in Navasota, Tex. Hospital attendants said both remain in very critical condition. REID received head injuries, BALYEAT was said to have suffered severe internal injuries.
The six members of the COPPINGER and BALYEAT families were returning to Pasadena after attending commencement exercises Friday at Texas A & M College near Bryan.
The REIDS were en route from Orange to Austin where the young attorney was taking $40,000 in non-negotiable high school stadium bonds of the Orange Independent School district.
