Toyah, TX Locomotive Boiler Explosion, Jun 1906
FIREMAN FATALLY HURT.
Crown Sheet of Locomotive Boiler Blows Out While He Is Shoveling Coal.
Special to The News.
Toyah, Tex., June 10--John McFadyn, Texas and Pacific fireman of engine No. 219, while on his run from Big Springs to Toyah was fatally injured at a point two miles east of this place at 5 o'clock this morning. The crown sheet of the engine blew out from some unknown cause while McFadyn was in the act of putting coal in the fire box, at once enveloping the unfortunate fireman in a cloud of steam and hot coals, burning him about the head and upper part of his body. The force of the explosion blew him out of the cab on the right of way, the train running about fifteen miles per hour.
A. A. Blevins, engineer, of Big Springs, probably owes his escape to the fact that the door of the firebox was open, thus protecting him.
McFadyn was thirty years of age, a native of Scotland and a highly respected young man. He will probably be buried here, as he has no relatives in this country, so far as known.
