TORNADO HITS WALNUT SPRINGS ESTIMATE DAMAGE AT $100,000

Fort Worth, May 23 – Damage approximating $200,000 was inflicted in Walnut Springs and vicinity yesterday afternoon when a heavy wind accompanied by hail and rain, visited that section. It is estimated the damage in Walnut Springs will reach $100,000 and in the surrounding country fully as much.

Practically every window pane in the town was broken by the hail, every store building was damaged and few residences escaped. Mrs. Hamilton was slightly injured and her café completely wrecked. Thirteen other persons in the building at the time escaped uninjured. The Presbyterian church is almost a complete wreck and a large grain elevator collapsed.

The Baptist church at Steel’s Creek was demolished. This is between Walnut Springs and Morgan.

Farmers in the vicinity declare crop damage will be heavy.

WALNUT SPRINGS TORNADO DOES EXTENSIVE DAMAGE

WACO, TEXAS May 22 – Owing to wire trouble communications with Walnut Springs, 62 miles north on the Texas Central railroad, was out off this morning and the storm damage there could not be accurately obtained but a terrific tornado in that section did much damage to property. One school building between Walnut Springs and Morgan was demolished but nobody was injured. The bridge on Steel’s creek was damaged by high water, the rain in that vicinity measuring from two to two and a half inches. One section of the two span bridge was washed away.

The Brazos river is rising here and is already touching the 18 foot mark. Heavy rains are reported at Granbury, Kopperl, Morgan and Whitney.

It is reported that a brick building in Walnut Springs was demolished and that a Mrs. Hamilton was injured but this has not been confirmed.
