Gas Well On Fire Near Cross Plains

Workman Badly Burned and Rig Destroyed With $8,000 Los.

Special to The News.
Cross Plains, Callahan Co., Texas, May 28.-A gas explosion at the McDonough No. 5 well of Crabb, McNeal & Bryant, eight miles south of here, at noon Saturday ignited a 3,000,000-foot flow of gas, destroyed the rig and tools and seriously burned James Hecht, tool dresser on duty at the well.

The explosion was caused by a heavy gas flow, which was discovered at 1,135 feet and mudded off between the eight and ten-inch casings, suddenly blowing the mud from the space between the casings, filling the cellar and rig with gas, which exploded from a lighted forge.

The well was still burning Monday and a battery of boilers were being arranged to snuff off the blaze with steam.

The property loss is estimated at $8,000 with no insurance.
