Cherry Dies Of Injuries

Taking Musician to Hospital by Plane Is Unavailing.

Houston, Texas, Nov. 11 (AP).-Bernard Cherry, 25, former Houstonian and one of the most popular musicians in the state, died at 2:45 a.m. Friday at a hospital here from injuries received in an automobile wreck near the village of Borden, five miles east of Weimar, early Thursday.

A farmer on his way to Weimar found Cherry under his overturned roadster on the San Antonio highway about daylight. He took the injured man to the City hall in Weimar, where he was given first aid treatment. His skull and collar bone were fractured and he was internally injured.

Physicians called Houston for an ambulance and one was sent. A half hour later a second telephone call said it was imperative the Cherry be removed to a hospital.

Frank Hawks, Houston pilot, flew to Weimar in his Ryan monoplane at more than 100 miles an hour. He called for a volunteer to accompany him and the injured musician back to Houston. Dr. C. E. Duve, aged physician at Weimar, responded. It was the physician’s first trip in an airplane.

The plane was met at the landing field by an ambulance and Cherry rushed to the hospital. He arrived there two hours and ten minutes after Hawks left Houston. The actual round trip of 180 miles was made in an hour and fifty minutes.

How long Cherry laid in the road before he was discovered is not known, but Houston friends said he left this city in time to have arrived at the scene of the accident about 3 a.m. He did not recover consciousness.
