$40,000 FIRE BURNS PART OF ELK POINT

Elk Point, S. D., June 25.----Fire was discovered in the basement of the Hoffmen double brick store building, occupied by the Union Investment company as a general store and O. M. Walters, hardware. The origin of the fire was probably incendiary, although there was a heavy electrical storm three hours before. The building and both stocks of goods are a complete loss, aggregating $40,000. The adjoining solid brick building was uninjured. Dr. L. R. Burlingame, asleep in the second story, was overcome by smoke and had to be carried from the building.

The Union County Investment company's stock was invoiced $28,000 June 1 and was insured for $18,500. The building was insured for $3,000 in mutual companies and was easily worth double that amount.

O. M. Walters, hardware, was insured for $3,075 and carried a $5,000 stock.

The Union County Investment company will open tomorrow in the Smythe building, just across the street.

O. M. Walters will resume business in the old Adams barber shop. The burned building will probably be replaced at once with solid rock.
