Redfield, SD Stage Coach Runaway, May 1908

MRS. S. A. BRIGGS HAS CLOSE CALL

Mrs. S. A. Briggs was brought home yesterday from Redfield by her son, Harry Briggs, and her son-in-law, C. C. Shattuck, after having been quite badly injured in a runaway. Her left leg is broken just above the ankle, she is also badly shaken up and bruise.

Mrs. Briggs had an experience which she will doubtless remember as long as she lives. She had been at St. Lawrence, Hand county, taking care of a sick relative. To save a long, round-about trip by rail she came across country to Redfield by stage. On the way, the stage team became unmanageable, ran away and finally the harness broke. Mrs. Briggs was thrown out, injured as mentioned, and was left lying on the prairie ten miles from Redfield for more than an hour. A party came back to search for her and found her on the ground suffering the greatest pain.

She was taken to Redfield and her relatives here notified. While the injury is a bad and painful one, it is considered that under circumstances Mrs. Briggs came out of the accident luckily. She is now at the home of her daughter, Mrs. C. C. Shattuck.
